What makes a good picture?

Muses

My favourite photographers are : Robert Doisneau, a French photographer who recorded pre and post war Parisian scenes in black and white. I also admire Yann Arthus-Bertrand's work. In the past few years he has been shooting from helicopters views of the earth from above to sensitize people to alarming issues related to the environment.

My favourite subjects

My favourite subjects are landscape, travel, animals and macro. I am not a big fan of portraits simply because I found it difficult to please the model. I much prefer black and white picture as they convey a different mood and feel. It also shows texture and shadows in a different light.

My equipment

I now own a DSLR Canon 400D with 3 lenses : Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 USM, Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 III USM and Canon EF 100mm 2.8 macro. I am still interested in traditional photography even though I have not used my Canon 300V for a while.

Join the club!

Since I have moved to England I feel that my photography has gone from strength to strength. I joined The Walthamstow and District Photographic Society (http://www.wdps.org/) in May 2004 and have submitted photographs for competitions, battles and exhibitions regularly. I have had some photographs published in travel brochures.

Going digital

I had to upgrade my camera when I started working as a photojournalist. The photos I took were published on a daily basis. A local journalist convinced me to join his club in France in order to improve my skills. I then learnt about camera techniques, composition and most importantly started looking at my photographs with a more critical eye.

The newspaper I was writing for made the move to digital so I was provided with a digital camera which meant photos could be transferred to the newspaper immediately.

About me

I received my first camera from my Godmother for my first communion when I was 12. It was a small point and shoot film camera which was good enough for holiday snaps or to take photos of my brother or my favourite cat.
